Zatoichi, Re-Sounded

I took a scene for Takeshi Kitano’s film Zatoichi (2003) and re-imagined the audio, focusing on the use of silence and near silence in the film and its juxtaposition (in this scene in particular) with the deliberately over the top sound design in the Samurai’s thought-flash of how the fight will unfold. I was particularly interested in the almost total drop in audio in the moment before the fight begins, and decided to explore the notion of silence being a deadly force within this film world. I explored these ideas, stretching them against the context of the moving image and attempting to exaggerate them to almost comic effect.

The original scene is below, for context.
