The Bit-Crushed Heart – Sonic Nostalgia in Hyper Light Drifter
For the class Music on Screen as part of my masters, I made a video essay about sonic nostalgia in Heart Machine’s Hyper Light Drifter.
The first part of the assignment was to make a three minute trailer for this essay, which can be found here:
The full essay can be found here:
The full essay deviates from the trailer in some ways, which I will outline briefly:
- I abandoned using Caryl Flynn’s Strains of Utopia as a source, because it seemed too tangential to my aims.
- I decided to include a section on Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight as a counter point from which to examine a game with a nostalgically restorative approach.
- I was lucky enough to interview HLD’s sound designer, Akash Thakkar, for the essay proper, which was a huge benefit.
Due to the time constraints of the submission, the project it’s still a little rough round the edges, but I’m proud of it nonetheless.
